As the holiday season is upon us, and the New Year swiftly approaching, I feel like it’s a good time not only for self-reflection but also taking stock of one’s professional life.
I’m pretty bad at setting goals and making resolutions, it’s just not how I operate. The loftier the goal the more I shy away from it because I don’t want to be disappointed if I don’t reach it. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t have any ambitions. I always strive to be better…personally and professionally but I don’t like saying “I want to lose x number of pounds in 3 months or gain x number of new clients” because life gets in the way and it doesn’t always work out. Instead, if I approach every day simply with the desire to improve a little bit in some area, I can feel good about small accomplishments. And they add up over time. Maybe I’d get there faster if I had a number in mind and worked as hard as I could to get there, but I don’t want to live my life chasing some arbitrary number. I find that process to be stressful and sometimes even discouraging. I’d rather just do the best that I can every day and focus on what’s important in the now while holding on to a more general idea of where I should be headed.
In fact, it’s all a head game. What will motivate you to improve yourself personally and professionally? If you need a number, then use it. If you are self-driven then go out there and apply yourself to the best of your ability and success will come. How do you measure this success if you don’t have a number? Simple…in contentment.
